I was asked the other day, “What do you love the most about being a magician?” Wow, what a question! I replied, “How long do you have?” I could write a book about it. However, since this is a blog, I am limited to this space and your time.
Children’s Reactions
My first thought was the expressions on kids faces when you show them a really amazing trick. Their little jaws drop, their eyes get really huge, as if their eyes are going to pop out of their heads, and they sit there looking shocked, wondering what has just happened.
I was at a party for a 9 year old one day. After I did a trick, he turned to his father and said, “How did he do that? I was watching his hands and I don’t know how he did that.” Those are the kind of comments that make my day!!
Adults Reactions
It doesn’t just apply to children either. To get responses like that from adults is very exciting and encouraging as well. I was doing a show one day recently and a dad came up to me afterwards and said, “That was an amazing show. I’m still trying to figure out how you did the first trick, let alone all the others!” A really good magician can and should get these reactions and comments from both adults and children often. If they are not, then they shouldn’t be a magician!
Other Reactions
As well as the above, a big smile, huge laughter, and a little applause are almost as exciting for me to see and hear. These responses give me the assurance that the audience is enjoying themselves. It’s not the magic tricks that gets these reactions, it’s the way the magician performs them. But that is another subject for another time, in another blog.
